At the age
of 51, Captain Joshua Slocum was the first man to
successfully circumnavigate or sail alone around the
world, a journey of 46,000 miles. His famous voyage
in the 36-foot sloop 'SPRAY' was only part of a life
filled with adventure, exploration and ingenuity,
making him 'America's best known sailor'..
He
recorded this adventure in his book, 'Sailing Alone
Around the World', which became an instant best seller.
In the fall of 1909, Captain Slocum left on another
exciting voyage to South America and was never seen
or heard from again. His disappearance has left generations
guessing as to what eventually became of him, leading
to many different fantasies; was he a victim of the
Bermuda Triangle, killed by pirates, or did he disappear
for a reason?
His
courageous journey has since inspired thousands of
individuals, whether they be mariner or landlocked;
young or old; to believe in themselves and have the
courage to try their own adventures.
